Shown here is the audi torium at Ridgecrest which will seat 2,600 people and will house in congregational style and classrooms 5,000 people simultaneously. Ridgecrest is the summer capitol of Southern Raptists and derives its name from its location on the crest of the Rlue Ridge mountains overlooking Royal Gorge. It is called the land of per petual vacation and botan ical paradise; a garden of pleasure in “The Land of the Sky." Under the direction of Robert Guy, who is entering upon his second year as manager, Ridgecrest will this year celebrate its 40th anniversary. During this period thousands of leaders have come here for instruc tion and inspiration. Among the speakers and teachers are to be found some of the nation’s best in the religious and educational field. More than 3000 delegates will at tend the Southwide Baptist Student Retreat which will be held from June 9 to 10. Ridgecrest is operated by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Convention, Nashville, Tennessee. SOCIETY Clubs - Parties - Meetings MRS. SOBOL HOSTESS AT BRIDGE PARTY Mrs. Chester Sobol entertained with three tables of bridge at her home last week. Miss Lou Lindsey held high score and Mrs. Wood row Beddingfield, low. Floating prize was won by Mrs. W. W. White. Other guests were Mrs. C. C. Godfrey, Mrs. Reid Tull, Mrs. H. H. Brooker, Miss Madeline For tune, Miss Doris Byrd, Mrs. Pat Randolph, Mrs. Berendt Nord heilm, and Mrs. William Hickey. Delightful refreshments were served. REV. McDONALDS SPEAKS ; TO MONTREAT STUDENTS The Montreat College Youth Fellowship Vespers were held on the lawn of Central Park last Sun j day evening. The Rev. Thad Mc- Donald of the Black Mountain j Methodist church brought the message. His topic was “Beauty ; in Nature and in Life.” Special ! music was sung by a double j quartet. MRS. ENSLEY HONORED WITH DINNER PARTY Mrs. Fred Ensley was honored Monday night with a dinner party at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. J. L. Stepp. Those present were: Mrs. Fred Albertson of Blacksburg, Va., Mr. and Mrs. A . RIDGECREST . . . Pritchell Hall, the main hotel of the Southern Bap tist assembly at Ridgecrest, is one of 158 buildings maintained for the accommodation o f the 30,000 guests which come here annually to attend summer confer ences. The assem bly is open during June, July, and August to more than a score of re ligious conferences, comprised of peo ple from more than 25,000 Baptist churches in 20 southern states. DIXONS HOME FROM TRIP Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Dixon re turned last Wednesday from a two week’s trip through Carolina. The first week was spent in Eastern Carolina and the last in visiting Roaring Gap, Boone, Linville, Blowing Rock, and Little Switzer land. Mr. Dixon reports that it was extremely cold at Blowing Rock. William Neal, Jr., of Newport News, Va., and Miss Martha Covin of Black Mountain. ANNOUNCE COMING MARRIAGE Mr. and Mrs. J. 0. Williams announce the coming marriage of their daughter, Miss Dorothy Jean, to James Kelly Wilkinson of Marion, N. C. Mr. Wilkinson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J F. Wilkinson also of Marion. The wedding date is set for some time in June. NEEDLEWORK GROUP NAMES OFFICERS On May 17 the Needlework group of the Arts Club met at Mrs. Keith’s. The following officers for the year ’4B-49 were elected. Mrs. Lloyd Stinchcomb, chairman, Miss Elizabeth Zernow, secretary. The next meeting will be in September. I ■W. al 1 'I ’■ ■ Jtjf £■ - Methodist Bible School May 31 Through June 4 A one week vacation church school will be held at the Meth odiA church May 31—June 4. The sessions will last from nine to eleven o’clock each morning. In structors for the several age groups are as follows: Beginners: Mrs. L. H. Gregory and Miss Marilyn Cook; Primaries, Mrs. Dempsey Whitaker and Miss Joyce Gnieu; Juniors, Mrs. B. E. Nordhielm and Mrs. Thad Mc- Donald. The theme for the week is “Our Father’s World.” The children participating in the school will have charge of the church school rally day program .Sunday, June 6. Following the worship service a picnic lunch will be served on the church lawn for all members of the church. The vacation church school is open to any child wishing to at tend. Phillips company of Or lando, the largest independent packing company in the state, has spent two weeks at the Monte Vista. Mr. Robinson, who has spent many summers in Black Mountain, expects his family to arrive soon. DR. TIPTON AT CONVENTION Dr. W. H. Tipton attended the Southern Baptist convention held last week at Memphis, Tennessee. On Friday morning he went to the breakfast for foreign missionaries at the Peabody hotel.
